Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra

 The Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra is open to area students, ages 13-18, by audition and presents three concerts annually.  The director, Stephen L. Gage, and assistant director, Richard Smrek, are retained by the Youngstown Symphony Society to provide artistic leadership.  Youth Orchestra members rehearse each Monday during the school year at the DeYor Performing Arts Center from 6 – 8:30 PM. Henry H. Stambaugh Youth Concert Band

The Stambaugh Youth Concert Band (SYCB), under the direction of Mr. John Veneskey, was created in the fall of 2001 to bring together outstanding high school musicians from the area to perform the very best concert band literature in the historic concert hall of Stambaugh Auditorium.  The SYCB continues to serve the young student musicians of the area with an experience that allows them to perform and feel music on a level that compliment their musical training in their respective schools, on a level with equally outstanding and talented student musicians.

The students of the SYCB presented their first concert on Thursday, December 6, 2001, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the opening of the auditorium.  Two concerts have been presented each year since the first concert.

Over 525 students have performed with the band during the first six years representing eight counties, and thirty-two school systems in Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.  

Barbara Armstrong Memorial Youth Band Scholarship
The scholarship has been established to pay tribute to Barbara Armstrong for her dream, her determination, and her commitment to the student of the Henry H. Stambaugh Youth Concert Band. A Trust Fund will provide an annual scholarship in her name to an outstanding senior member of the Youth Band to continue their involvement in music.
